First Time Cocker Spaniel Parents
~~No matter how much you love your new Cocker Spaniel Puppy, he
or she will love you back even more. Guaranteed!  They are as
dependent on you as a newborn.  Devotion is not an option.

These are some things you need to know before you make your big
decision!  Please consider them carefully.

Owning a Cocker is a great joy, but it truly is like having a new baby,
it's a big responsibility that doesn't go away.  This little one is going to
be counting on you to supply love and care for the rest of his life.  You
deserve the best . . . and so does he.

A well groomed Cocker is amazing - 5-10 minutes of brushing and/or
combing everyday will keep your baby looking great.  Their hair grows
all over - including under the ears and between the pads of their feet.
They will need an appointment for a full grooming/clip every 6-8
weeks.  The cost of this can vary from $25 - $50.  Many people choose a
shorter "puppy clip", and they still look darling!  Your puppy will be
clipped before he leaves us, but it's important to make your first
appointment soon so that he doesn't forget that the noise from the
clippers won't hurt him.

Ear care for Cocker Spaniels is also important.  All Spaniels can have
ear problems when their owners do not keep
their ears clean and dry.  It's really not difficult to clean your puppy's
ears -  it is easy to forget!  Because Cockers have long ears, the air to
the inside of their ears is reduced.  It's important to check them
regularly.

Your puppy will have received his first puppy shots, had a physical
from our vet and have been given a heart worm prevention pill before
he leaves us.  It's very important that you find a vet that you are
comfortable with to continue your puppy's care throughout his life.  He
will need a few more shots as a puppy and then an annual check up to
keep him healthy.

Housebreaking is an ongoing effort.  Make sure puppy goes out as
soon as he wakes up, after he eats, after playing and as often as you can
get him out for the first few weeks. Praise his good work - he wants to
please you.  It's amazing how well some puppies catch on, but
accidents will happen.  Have patience.

Be sure your whole family is involved in this decision.  If you are ready
to make a commitment to having a Cocker in your life,  please contact
us.  If we don't have a puppy available, we may be able to help you
find one.
